I think the future of real estate and travel websites will arise from geographical targeting. Only a few huge companies will be able to build websites around the names of large cities and get them ranked. In fact the best of these sites seem to be based on domain names that people type directly into their browsers and don't search for at all. (Hotels dot com comes to mind).
Regular people will need to focus on "Long tail" key phrases. For example, I think I have a chance to get "Palm Beach Luxury Properties" ranked with my budget & resources. I doubt I could ever rank for "Palm Beach Real Estate".
Regular people also need to understand they should include their domain name in all their print, radio and TV advertising. That way many local customers will type in their address directly and bypass the search process.
If we are successful in developing traffic for these sites we will be offering direct ads for sale on them. This would mean a Palm Beach Realtor could put an ad on our site that links to a custom page on their website, specifically written to appeal to the luxury property buyer. There will never be a lot of traffic, but it will be very targeted and should provide an excellent ROI.
